Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cooking Time: 30-40 minutes

Makes: 1 loaf

Ingredients

  • 500 gr flour plus some extra for kneading

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

  • 350 to 400 ml buttermilk

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, salt and bicarbonate of soda.

  2. Add the buttermilk and mit it together using a wooden spoon. (Depending on the absorbency of the flour, you might need to add a bit more milk or flour. The dough should not be too wet or too sticky.)

  3. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead it briefly until it all comes together.

  4. Shape the dough into a round ball, flatten slightly and using a knife, make a cross on the top of the dough.

  5. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes. In the meantime pre-heat the oven to 180C.

  6. Bake for about 30 to 40 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped at the bottom.

  7. Let the loaf cool down before cutting. Serve with salted irish butter.

  8. Enjoy :)
